Afforestation and Reforestation Project in Pias - La Libertad

The «Pias» project will develop A&R activities over 7,319 ha, mostly in abandoned marginal lands, and/or in terrains with high forestry vocation that are being used for non sustainable activities like subsistence agriculture.

The project will look for a joint-venture system between local rural communities located in the districts of Pias and Pataz, La Libertad, and private investor with a share on the benefits of Eucaliptus globulus and Pinus patula, as well as native species, aiming to supply the demand of mining companies located in the area.

Baseline Scenario

Which emissions are the proposed Clean Development Mechanism CDM project displacing?
The project will recover lands with natural forest aptitude, which have been degraded by unsustainable activities, and will reduce the pressure over natural forest lands for wood resources, mainly over the buffer zone of the «Rio Abiseo» National Park.
What would the future look like without the proposed CDM project?
Degradation processes over land will continue, due to the lack of development opportunities. Hydric erosion and soil lost will become critical, as they are related to the increase of land slides and floods.
What would the estimated total greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction be with the project?
Without the project, more than 7,000 ha will continue a degradation process without any sequestration capacity, and the last natural forest relicts will be destroyed mainly due to fuel wood extraction and new areas for agriculture and cattle raising.

«Pias» project is intended to sequestrate near 2,026,595 tCO2e on the first 20 years.

Current Status

Earliest project start date
Preparatory activities are developed as a pilot project, training local communities for the development of greater size projects. The first stage of this activities were co-financed by «Fondo de las Américas» and La Poderosa Mining Company.
Estimate of time required before becoming operational
It’s expected that the project will be in capacity to start by 2005.
What is the project lifetime?
65 years.
Current status or phase of the project
• Pre feasibility and Feasibility study finished and available
• Preparatory pilot activities, which will also train the local communities which will be prepared to afford greater size projects.
• Negotiations phase: A letter communicating the intention to develop a CDM project has been already send to the Designated National Authority on CDM

Estimated Emission Sequestrated

• Up to and including 2012: 150,998 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 20 years: 2,026,595 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 30 years: 1,618,614 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 40 years: 2,026,595 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 60 years: 2,026,595 tCO2e

Project Benefits

• Demand for 20,000 day’s work for plant production and plantation activities
• Demand for 25,000 day’s work for the forest management activities.
• Reduction of flooding, landslides and sedimentation risks.
• Reduction of pressure over native forests, mainly over the buffer zone of the «Rio Abiseo» National Park.
• Erosion control and slope protection.
• Cost reduction of forest products for the mining activity in the zone.
• The project will work with 3 communities, involving 2,600 families in the process.
