«Aguaytía» Reforestation Project
«Aguaytía» Project consists of the installation of 1,400 hectares of forest plantations, using a fast-growing native species to sequestrate carbon dioxide while recovering deforested areas in the Peruvian Amazon basin, specifically in the Aguaytía basin.
«Aguaytía» project is a community-based approach, willing to bring local people a new paradigm of sustainable development in the amazon lowlands, producing social, environmental and economical benefits at all local, regional, national and global levels. |
Baseline Scenario
Which emissions are the proposed Clean Development Mechanism CDM project displacing? «Aguaytía» project is a regular size LULUCF / CDM project, focused on the sequestration of carbon dioxide by managing fast growing tree plantations.
What would the future look like without the proposed CDM project?
Traditional slash-and-burn agricultural activities would continue the degradation process started early in the 40’s with the agricultural expansion that followed the roads development in the Amazon lowlands. Soil fertility loss, erosion, biodiversity loss and changed water regimes are some of the critical current effects, expected to worsen with the pass of time.
What would the estimated total greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction be with the project?
A fluctuating baseline, produced by the periodical burning of the farm areas result in a net positive flux of carbon, releasing 37,434 tCO2e to the atmosphere every year.
Instead, «Aguaytía» project is intended to sequestrate 304,979.5 tCO2e
Current Status
Earliest project start date
The pre-operational phase has been concluded: all soil analyses are completed, capacity-building schemes are developed, a permanent nursery with capacity for production of 250,000 plants is fully operative and the farmers to work with are already selected.
The project has begun on September 2004
Estimate of time required before becoming operational
No extra time is needed, depending on the funding.
What is the project lifetime?
28 years
Current status or phase of the project
• Identification and pre-selection phase completed
• Pre feasibility study finished
• Negotiations phase: A letter communicating the intention to develop a CDM projects has been already send to the Designated National Authority on CDM
• Local capacity-building ongoing
• Plant production facilities fully operational
• 70 hectares have been already installed.
Estimated Emission Sequestrated
• Up to and including 2012: 304,979.5 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 20 years: 304,979.5 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 30 years: 304,979.5 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 40 years: 304,979.5 tCO2e
