Recovering the mountain ecosystem in the Piura River Basin
The Piura River Project aims to set the appropriate conditions and mechanisms to accomplish the recovering of the degraded mountain ecosystem in the high zone of the Piura River basin.
1,200 hectares have been prioritized; afforestation and reforestation activities will be done in order to help the population to achieve sustainable development schemes, reducing erosion and desertification, preserving the water and giving food security for the population. |
Baseline Scenario
Which emissions are the proposed Clean Development Mechanism CDM project displacing? The Piura River Project will focus on sequester CO2 by planting a mix of woody vegetation in the area, contributing to stop the desertification processes.
What would the future look like without the proposed CDM project?
If the Project is not implemented, the land would be covered by grass, and the erosion of the land and the degradation of the soil would continue. Without protection of the slopes, the water regime will change and water scarcity will occur.
It’s important to mention that the area is highly vulnerable to the effects of «El Niño».
What would the estimated total greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction be with the project?
The reduction of emissions of the grasslands is considerably lower than the reduction under the forest scenario. It has been estimated that the project will sequester 380,761 tCO2e on the first 20 years.
Current Status
Earliest project start date
The first plantation will take place during the rainy season, between January and March, 2006.
Estimate of time required before becoming operational
Carbon sequestration will begin from the first year of plantations, in 2006
What is the project lifetime?
30 years
Current status or phase of the project
• Identification and site selection ongoing.
• Strategic alliances are already formed.
Estimated Emission Sequestrated
• Up to and including 2012: 174,546 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 20 years: 380,761 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 30 years: 349,514 tCO2e
