Reforestation and Sustainable Management of Dry Woods in Chirinos and Cachaquito - Piura

The Project will carry afforestation and reforestation activities on 1050 hectares of Chirinos and Cachaquito zones, in the Suyo District, for the extraction and commercialization of non-wood products of the “algarrobo” tree (Prosopis pallida). . The establishment of the plantation will assure the creation of new incomes with the implementation of apiculture and the improvement of the goat and sheep cattle.

Water supply will be assured through the construction of wells and the implementation of an artisan irrigation system.

Baseline Scenario

Which emissions are the proposed Clean Development Mechanism CDM project displacing?
The project will sequester CO2 through afforestation and reforestation activities, contributing to stop desertification processes.
What would the future look like without the proposed CDM project?
The remaining trees and shrubs in the area will be used for energy production. Economical and social situation of the population will become worse, due to desertification processes and the degradation of the natural resources.
What would the estimated total greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction be without the project?
No significant carbon sequestration would occur within the project area if the absence of the A/R activities
The Cachaquito project is intended to sequester 63 842 tCO2e on the first 20 years.

Current Status

Earliest project start date
Planting will start on the beginning of the rainy season, November 2007.
Estimate of time required before becoming operational
Carbon sequestration will begin on the second year of the project, after the plantation is completed.
What is the project lifetime?
30 years
