Central Selva Climate Action Project

The Project consists of the reforestation of 7,000 hectares in the Central Selva area of Peru, which is located in the eastern slopes of the Central Andes and forms part of the greater Amazon River basin. Reforestation will be done in CDM eligible areas belonging to small landowners, through a combination of natural regeneration management and reforestation with native species. Reforestation areas surround three state-protected areas with high biodiversity and endemism.

The reforestation is programmed to begin in 2006.

Baseline Scenario

Which emissions are the proposed Clean Development Mechanism CDM project displacing?
The Central Selva Climate Action Project will counteract GHG emission generated by perennial clearing of woody vegetation in the area, that have caused the loss of around 130 Km2 of native forest, developing regeneration management and reforestation activities.
What would the future look like without the proposed CDM project?
It has been estimated that over the next 12 years a 7% deforestation rate would occur. Also, most of the presently degraded areas would not recover due to continuous burning and grazing.
What would the estimated total greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction be with the project?
Without the project no significant carbon sequestration would occur within the 7,000 CDM eligible hectares
«Selva Central Climate Action» project is intended to sequester nearly 557,000 tCO2e on the first 20 years.

Current Status

Earliest project start date
Preliminary activities (nurseries, fencing, contracts, pilot tests, etc.) are planned to be done in 2005. Planting will begin in 2006.
Estimate of time required before becoming operational
Carbon sequestration will begin from the first year of plantations, in 2006.
What is the project lifetime?
30 years
Current status or phase of the project
• Pre-feasibility study finished and available upon request to the contacts provided at the end of this form.
• The baseline methodology will be presented to the methpanel soon.
• Negotiations phase: A letter communicating the intention to develop a CDM project has been already sent to the Designated National Authority on CDM.

Estimated Emission Sequestrated

• Up to and including 2012: 183,000 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 20 years: 557,000 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 30 years: 770,000 tCO2e
• Up to a period of 40 years: 1,012,000 tCO2e

Project Benefits

• Recover degraded areas, improve natural capital and contribute to diminish the threats to biodiversity.
• Generate income to landowners through direct employment and by sharing the carbon revenues.
• Technical assistance component geared to improve current agricultural practices of participants
• Approximately 400 small landowners are targeted to participate in the project, which is equivalent to 2,000 people.
• Direct effects include income generation though direct employment and harvest of planted species, as well as increasing land value by recovering degraded areas.

Project Participant and Financing

Total project cost estimate:
• Development costs: US$ 300,000
• Installation costs: US$ 9,600,000
• Total project costs: US$ 9,900,000
Sources of finance to be sought or already identified:
• Private donations to cover investment costs
• Carbon credits to cover maintenance costs.
• Carbon finance contribution sought: As much as we can have in advance.
